 European Championships - Lille, France, October 2002

A team of Irish fighters took part in the IFMA European Championships in  October.  The team was as follows.
 

Fighters:

  • Jamie Williams (Cork)
  • Paddy Clint (Dublin)
  • Andy Keegan (Dublin)
  • Jamie Crawford (Belfast)
  • Neil Brennan (Carlow)

 

Trainers:

  • Anthony Corkery (Cork)
  • Frank McConville (Belfast)
  • Paul Kelly (Dublin)

Judge:

  • Ger Ryan (Cork)

 

Unfortunately, Jamie Crawford was unable to travel due to illness.  The results were as follows:

Senior:

-54kg: Neil Brennan lost to Suvazov Kamal of Kazhakstan.  Kamal went on to win a silver medal.

-60kg: Brendan O'Shea won his first fight against Cvijanovic Danijel of Slovenia.  He was then stopped in the fourth round of a close fight by Benton Martin of Holland in the quarter finals.

Jamie Williams was stopped in the fourth round of his fight against Rehak Ladislav from the Czech Republic.

-67kg: Martin Horgan lost a very close points decision to Karttunen Tomi of Finland.  Tomi had won a Gold Medal in the Kings Cup in Thailand earlier in the year, and won a Silver Medal in France.

-75kg: Paddy Clint was stopped in the second round of his fight against Sroubek Karel from the Czech Republic due to a bloody nose.  Karel went on to win the Gold Medal in the category.

Junior

-63.5kg: Andy Keegan from Dublin won a Gold Medal in his category of the competition.  He dominated his first fight against a Danish opponent to earn his place in the final against a French fighter.  The French fighter was then stopped a minute or so into the first round of the final.
